  • Beschrijving: Unedited sequences from the journey of Roussos Koundouros in cenrtal Asia with reference to places passed by Alexander the Great.
    1. EXCAVATIONS AT GORDIO The ancient capital of the kingdom of Phrygia, in central Anatolia, near Sangarius River, about 100 km west of Ankara. The excavations, which began around 1900, brought to light finds from civilizations that flourished in the Bronze Age, as well as finds of Phrygian, Greek and Roman origin. In 334 B.C., Alexander the Great sliced through a knot that was impossible to come undone, the famed Gordian Knot. It had been prophesied that whoever loosed the knot would become ruler of all Asia.     10. THE KADAHAR MARKET PLACE Trade city in south Afghanistan, whose population, for the most part, belongs to the Pashtun tribe. It is speculated that the city derived its name from Iskandar, which is Persian for Alexander the Great. (KADAHAR - SOUTH AFGHANISTAN, 20/8/1963)

    12. THE SMALL & BIG BUDDHA IN THE BAMIYAN VALLEY The Bamiyan Valley stretches under the Hindu Kush Mountains, northwest of Kabul. The small (36m) and big (53m) Buddhas date from the 3rd - 5th century A.D. and were destroyed by the Taliban on the pretext of being pagan monuments, in spring 2001.     13. THE BLUE MOSQUE AT MAZARI SHARIF A holy city in the Balkh Province, in north Afganistan. The Blue Mosque, also known as "The Temple of the Chosen One", is the city's landmark. It was built for Caliph Ali, Prophet Mohammed's cousin and son-in-law. There is a legend that doves arriving at the Mosque turn into stars 40 days later.     16. A GROUP OF PEOPLE IN NURISTAN A region in northeast Afghanistan. The name means "the land of the enlighthened", as its inhabitants were the last be converted to Islam in 1896. In earlier times, the greater area, extending into Afghanistan and Pakistan, was called Kafiristan (land of the infidels), which now belongs to Pakistan. (NURISTAN - NORTHEAST AFGHANISTAN, 6/9/1963)
    17. KHYBER AND LOWARI PASSES The Khyber Pass (53km) links Afghanistan with north Pakistan, while the Lowari Pass (3km) lies in Pakistan and stretches along the River Chitral. The Khyber and Lowari Passes are geostrategic locations where many historic battles were fought. Alexander the Great crossed the Khyber Pass in 326 B.C. on his way to India.     2. MEVLANA MAUSOLEUM The Mausoleum of Mevlana or Jalal ad-Din Rumi (1207-1274) is in Konya (formerly Iconium), a historic city in North Asia Minor. Mevlana is regarded as one of the most important figures in Sufi's Islamic mysticism. His teachings do not relate to orthodox Islam, but to love and generosity between peoples and religions.     22. TAXILIA. THE ANCIENT CITY OF BIR-MUNT AND BUCHEPHALUS' GRAVE A city between the Indus and Hydaspis Rivers, north-west of Rawalpindi, in Pakistan. The ancient city of Bir-Munt was built by the Achaemenidae. The horse of Alexander the Great, which is said to have died of old age, was probably buried in the ancient city of Buchephlus, built by Alexander the Great in its honour, between Rawalpindi and Lahore.     3. A CAMP IN THE VALLEY OF GOREME The valley of Gioreme (known as Korama in Greek) is in the heart of Cappadocia. The volcanic composition of the terrain creates lunar landscapes with overhanging rocks and favoured the construction of cave dwellings.     4. ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE AT MT. NEMRUT Mt. Nemrut rises to 2150m in the province of Antiyiaman, in southeast Turkey. In the Hellenistic period, Antiochus (69-36 B.C), king of Syria and the greater area under the rule of the Commagene Dynasty (80 B.C. – 72 A.D.), made 4 heads of gods, merging elements from the ancient Greek and Persian religions, with reference to the Roman transmutation.     5. PALAEOLITHIC, HELLENISTIC, PERSIAN AND ROMAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS AT BYBLOS The ancient city of Byblos is in Lebanon, about 35km north of Beirut. It is regarded as one of the oldest, uninterruptedly inhabited cities of antiquity. It is speculated that this flourishing city of ancient Phoenicia derives its name from the ancient Greek word for papyrus, as it must have been a papyrus trade hub.     9. MASHHAD Mashhad is a holy town in Horasan Province, in southeast Iran, along the border with Afghanistan. The shots show illustrated scenes from Darius' death and the battle of Alexander the Great with the dragon, taken from "Shahnama", the Persian epic written by Ferdowsi (925-1025 A.D.).
